VA Educational benefits are limited to a monthly stipend and/or payment of mandatory tuition and fees to Doane University. Benefits only pay stipends for the months school attendance has been reported and these payments are pro-rated for partial (beginning and ending) months.
A beneficiary attending school full time for the approximated 8 months of the fall and spring semesters will earn approximately that many months of benefits. This is approximately $9,552 for 100% eligible Chapter 33 or Chapter 31, approximately $13,776 for Chapter 30, approximately $10,120 for Chapter 35 and approximately $3,176 for Chapter 1606. This is generally insufficient to cover the full cost of living while attending school.
Chapter 31 and Chapter 33 benefits offer differing ways to provide funding for books and supplies. Chapter 33 will issue a book stipend prior to each term while Chapter 31 provides all funding for books and supplies.
Other benefits such as Chapter 30, Chapter 35, and Chapter 1606 provide no tuition assistance or assistance with books and supplies.
Tuition Rates
Tuition & fees reported to the VA under Chapter 33 and Chapter 31 are calculated by taking the total tuition and mandatory fees and substracting institutional scholarships. The remaining balance is reported to the VA.
Example: A beneficiary attends school full time with tuition & fees estimated at $20,000 per semester and has earned $10,000 in institutional scholarships. $20,000 - $10,000 = $10,000. The tuition amount reported to the VA would be $10,000. Federal student loans and Pell grants are not factored in.
Veteran Readiness & Employment
HOW DO I GET MY BENEFITS STARTED?
You can apply by completing VA Form 28-1900, Disabled Veterans Application for Veteran Readiness. A veteran who is eligible for an evaluation under Chapter 31 (VR&E) must complete the VA Form 28-8832, Application for Veteran Readiness Counseling and meet with a Veteran Readiness Counselor (VRC). If the VRC determines that an employment handicap exists as a result of a service-connected disability, the veteran is found entitled to services. The VRC and the veteran will then continue counseling to select a track of services and jointly develop a plan to address the rehabilitation, employment, and educational needs of the veteran.
HOW MUCH MONEY ARE VR&E STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR?
Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) students receive funds for tuition as well as a living allowance. The exact benefit will vary per student.

Military science courses are available to Doane students through a cooperative program with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Military science is not an academic major, but credits earned in military science courses apply toward graduation from Doane. Courses are taught by UNL military science personnel and are
primarily offered on the UNL campus (Army courses may be offered at Doane if we have at least 6 students enrolled).
- UNL Army ROTC Student enroll in courses at Doane.
- UNL Air Force ROTC Students enroll in courses at Doane and UNL. Students have to apply to UNL as a Visiting Student so they have access to Black Board.
Upon successful completion of the Advanced Course of ROTC and upon recommendation by the military science faculty at UNL, students may be commissioned during the graduation ceremony when they earn their Doane degree. Army ROTC students are commissioned as Second Lieutenant, US Army Reserve or Regular Army. Air Force ROTC students are commissioned as Second Lieutenant, US Air Force.
