Frees Hall

Named for Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Frees, Frees Hall features a relaxed, homey atmosphere, offering a haven from the hustle and bustle of college life. A tiered, indoor theatre is perfect for Friday night movies, an outdoor grill offers space to gather with friends for home games, and a game room with a pool table provides a study break option—students are able to easily mingle and make friends.

Frees Hall was completed in 1931 as a women's residence, and was designed by Dean and Dean, Architects. The building matches Smith Hall in design and was built to accommodate 185 students.

A 450-seat dining hall was included in the basement, where students ate their meals until the campus center was built. The hall is named for Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Frees for their “generous interest in Christian education in Nebraska.”

Frees is now a coed residence. A 2009 renovation project restored and improved this campus landmark, adding amenities such as air conditioning, remodeled bedrooms and living spaces, a game lounge and theater area, and outdoor gathering spaces.

Other amenities include a vending machine, free laundry facilities, and live in ResLife staff members.

Each room in Frees provides a set of furniture for each resident. The rooms come with a twin XL bed and mattress, closet, window shades, a desk with a chair, dressers, tiled flooring, trash can and recycling bin, and lofting equipment for the bed.

Sheldon Hall

Sheldon Hall offers students an opportunity to meet new people, make connections, and stay involved during their college living experience. This energetic hall boasts a music studio, TV lounge, and classroom, as well as an outdoor fireplace and lawn games. Sheldon Hall takes its name from Margaret Thompson Sheldon, the first woman on Doane University’s Board of Trustees who served the college for 21 years.

Sheldon Hall, a co-ed residence hall located east of Frees Hall, opened in 1970 as a women’s residence hall. The three-story building was called "the new dorm" until 1978, when it was dedicated as Sheldon Hall after Margaret Thompson Sheldon, class of 1886. She was the first woman on the Board of Trustees, first Dean of Women and a professor of English, serving the college for 21 years.

A renovation project in 2010 enhanced the hall’s living spaces and added an exterior gathering area with a fireplace, lounges, a classroom, and a music room.

Other amenities include a vending machine, free laundry facilities, and live in ResLife staff members.

Each room in Sheldon provides a set of furniture for each resident. The rooms come with a twin XL bed and mattress, closet, window shades, a desk with a chair, dressers, tiled flooring, trash can and recycling bin, and lofting equipment for the bed.

Smith Hall

Sleek and modern, Smith Hall is the perfect residence hall for students who appreciate rest and relaxation. This four-story hall includes a gaming room outfitted with multiple gaming consoles and TVs. Smith Hall also features a lounge area and an outdoor courtyard with a grill and fireplace, allowing students of every interest to enjoy themselves.

Smith Hall (formerly Men’s Hall) was renamed in 1977 to honor Charles C. Smith, class of 1887, a former trustee and benefactor of the college. In 1929, Smith contributed a substantial, then-anonymous gift to assure construction of Men’s Hall.  The renaming of the building provided public recognition of his earlier contribution.

The building became a co-ed residence with the completion of a 2011 renovation project.  The project added a fourth floor to the landmark building.  Other improvements included a lounge area, gaming room, kitchen, computer lab with printing access, and an outdoor courtyard that includes a fireplace and grill.

Amenities include a vending machine, free laundry facilities, and live in ResLife staff members.

Each room in Smith provides a set of furniture for each resident. The rooms come with a twin XL bed and mattress, closet, window shades, a desk with a chair, dressers, tiled flooring, trash can and recycling bin, and lofting equipment for the bed.
