Dr. Ann Koopmann is the Director of Academic Advising at Doane University. In this role, Ann works with a team of Advisors who are dedicated to the student’s academic, personal and professional success. Ann’s experience in higher education began at Doane in the early 1990s. In her first higher education job she served three years as a Resident Director/Area Coordinator on the Crete campus, living and working in Frees Hall. It was there that she learned the love for higher education. That experience encouraged her to pursue a master’s degree in college student development. Since those early days, her experience in higher education spans the gamut from Residence Life, Admissions, New Student Enrollment, Student Services and Programs, as an Academic Advisor and an instructor of a first-year experience course, while also teaching a Leadership class. In all these positions, she has nurtured student development, and coached students as they pursue and achieve their educational goals. Currently she supervises a staff of professionals who passionately work in the student experience area.

Ann received all her degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; B.A. (Speech Communications) an M.A. (Educational Psychology), and a PhD in Educational Administration. Her M.A. program focused on College Student Development, and her Ph.D. program centered on Educational Leadership in Higher Education. Ann’s dissertation work focused on engaging first-year/first generation students in the collegiate experience both in and out of the classroom. Ann is a member of the Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA) and an Advisor to a National Sorority (Alpha Omicron Pi).

A native of Omaha she now resides just north of Lincoln. Ann’s husband (Kevin) completed his teaching credentials at Doane and finished work on a Master’s degree in Education. He is a retired music teacher but still gigs on the weekend. Their daughter Emily was born while Ann worked at Doane – they still have her Doane ID. Emily is the Executive Director of the Belmont Community Center in Lincoln, NE. Ann is a proud grandma to Max, and loves spending time with him. In Ann’s spare time she likes to read, spend time chatting over coffee (or tea) and is an avid walker.
