Helena Valquier-Flynn ’18
Nebraska City, Nebraska
Biochemistry | Theatre
As the oldest child of a single-parent home, Helena wasn't sure how she was going to pay for college. But, with the help of Doane's financial aid, she's been able to attend college and not go into a lot of debt. "They are very willing to work with students and have assisted me every year with financing my education," she said. That meant Helena was free to concentrate on being a student instead of stressing about how to pay her tuition bill.
Since coming to campus, Helena has been an active part of the theatre department, conducted research as a biochemistry major, joined a sorority, and participated in several student organizations. "It's been one of the best experiences of my life." She's been active off-campus, too, traveling and presenting at several conferences, and has had her research published. "It's very exciting. I would not have had these experiences if it hadn't been for the faculty and staff at Doane."
Helena's experience with the theatre and music departments are what first brought her to Doane, but it was the small classroom size and ability to know her professors on a first-name basis that really sold her. "They provide plenty of resources for research, shadowing, and have connections with various institutions. ... Whether you are wanting a career in medicine or research, Doane's professors are willing to assist you every step of the way."
"Earning My Shield means working hard to reach your goals and experiencing all Doane has to offer."
