Sociology is the study of all aspects of human social behaviors from individual behaviors to the social dynamics of small groups, institutions, and societies.

A degree in sociology pairs well with other social science majors, such as psychology and political science, sociology provides the ideal background for pursuing careers in law, medicine, business, consulting, education and more.

With a strong foundation in service-learning, students have the opportunity to work with child protective services, policing, and corrections. Students will also be encouraged to develop and present research and ideas at regional and national undergraduate sociological symposiums.

A major in Sociology opens students up to a new way of viewing, interacting and analyzing the world by focusing on the people around them through courses in:

Requirements for the Sociology Major:

Complete 1 or 2.

Option 1: General Sociology Major

Complete the following cognate course:

Internship

A maximum of eight internship credits in SOC 421 may be counted toward the major with the approval of the faculty in the discipline.

Option 2: Sociology Major with an emphasis in Criminology

Note:

a maximum of six internship credits in SOC 421 may be counted toward the emphasis.

Psych/Soc Club

The Psych/Soc Club at Doane University functions to promote interaction between students interested in the fields of Psychology and Sociology. The Psych/Soc Club at Doane University functions to provide resources and experiences to students regarding their professional careers. Additionally, the Psych/Soc Club will function to provide service opportunities that aide the campus community as well as the broader community focused on social and psychological needs.

Every year our sociology students conduct a campus-wide survey, with subjects varying each year, based on student interest. Students also research, prepare and write papers to submit to sociology symposiums. Past topics have included marriage, family, adoption and deviance.
